Goldstein didn't discover the proton. Ernest Rutherford did when he concluded that all nuclei must contain the nucleus of a hydrogen atom after observing the reaction of an alpha particle with Nitrogen to produce Oxygen and hydrogen (a proton). Goldstein only observed positively charged ions in "anode rays," but couldn't form a conclusion much beyond this due to differing charge to mass ratios. /end physics history lecture
