The teacher DID use the apostrophe correctly. The apostrophe is forming a contraction: "Rick Astley *IS* never gonna . . ." becomes "Rick Astley's . . ." Back to school for you! (Not to mention your subject-pronoun disagreement, i.e. "the teacher themselves" is not correct. "The teacher herself/himself" or "the teachers themselves".)
