  While der Stein in Deutsch does mean the rock, or the stone, stein is also used in reference to a mug used for drinking beer, originally from Stein Krug(Stone mug/jug). They were made of fired earthenware - stoneware, and is now referred to as a stein, now. He was labeling the mug as a stein, therefore, der Stein is correct :P.
