  I had a student who always begging for a sticker put on his quizzes, even though he was never anywhere near good enough. So one time I drew a circle and wrote 'sticker' in it.

  >.< "One can survive without the other" is NOT the same as "Both..." 'One' is singular. A can survive without B does not mean B can survive without A. You cannot make that assumption without more data. Saying that Both can survive means BOTH A and B can survive independently from each other.
